Explore Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde’s insights on the progress of the Coastal Road Project, aiming for completion by January 31. A transformative infrastructure initiative set to redefine Mumbai’s commuting experience

Mumbai’s Visionary Infrastructure Leap: Coastal Road Project

In a significant stride towards enhancing Mumbai’s connectivity and easing commuter woes, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently inspected the progress of the ambitious Coastal Road Project at Priyadarshini Park. Expressing optimism, Shinde affirmed that the project is on track for completion by January 31, marking a milestone in the city’s infrastructure development.

Advanced Techniques for a State-of-the-Art Tunnel:

The focal point of the Coastal Road Project is an 11 km-long tunnel, a critical component of the first phase. CM Shinde highlighted that advanced construction techniques are being employed to ensure efficiency and safety. Notably, this tunnel is distinguished as the largest of its kind in the country.

The utilization of cutting-edge technology extends beyond the structural aspects. In a forward-looking move, the tunnel incorporates safety measures against fire and smoke. In case of emergencies, arrangements have been made to swiftly evacuate smoke, ensuring the well-being of commuters.

Commute Relief during Peak Hours:

One of the project’s primary objectives is to alleviate traffic congestion during peak hours, providing a smoother commuting experience for residents. CM Shinde emphasized the significance of this infrastructure initiative, particularly during morning and evening rush hours when heavy traffic is a common challenge for Mumbaikars.

“This tunnel will greatly benefit commuters, especially during peak hours. It’s designed to enhance the flow of traffic and reduce travel time,” stated CM Shinde during his inspection.

Toll-Free Travel:

Addressing a common concern among commuters, CM Shinde clarified that toll tax will not be imposed on those utilizing the Coastal Road. This decision is poised to make the new route an even more attractive option for daily commuters, ensuring accessibility without an additional financial burden.

Phased Progress and Future Projections:

As the first phase nears completion, CM Shinde outlined the timeline for the subsequent stages of the Coastal Road Project. He anticipates the conclusion of Phase 2 by May, with ongoing construction activities to further streamline traffic in the city.

“The completion of this tunnel will mark a significant turning point in Mumbai’s infrastructure. We expect the traffic to automatically smoothen after the completion of the entire project,” stated CM Shinde, underlining the long-term benefits of the Coastal Road initiative.

Budget Allocation and Prioritization:

The commitment to the Coastal Road Project is evident in the budgetary allocations made by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the fiscal year 2022-23. Allocating a substantial ₹3200 crore, the BMC has accorded the highest priority to this infrastructure venture, surpassing even health-related expenditures in the wake of the ongoing pandemic.

Data from the BMC reveals that the Coastal Road Project commands a significant 17 percent share of the total budget, underscoring its strategic importance for the city. Health services follow closely with a 15 percent allocation, emphasizing the city’s dual focus on public health and infrastructure development.

In Conclusion: A Transformative Infrastructure Endeavor:

The Coastal Road Project stands as a testament to Mumbai’s commitment to redefining its urban landscape. CM Eknath Shinde’s recent inspection reaffirms the government’s dedication to timely completion and the subsequent benefits it promises for the city’s commuters. As the Coastal Road Project progresses, it paves the way for a more accessible, efficient, and resilient Mumbai.
